# Privacy Policy for BioRead Chrome Extension

**Last Updated:** May 2026

We at BioRead ("we", "our", or "us") are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains our practices regarding data collection and usage for the BioRead browser extension (the "Extension").

---

## 1. Zero Personal Data Collection

BioRead does **not** collect, store, or transmit any personal data, telemetry, analytics, or browsing history.

- **No Tracking:** We do not track the web pages you visit, the links you click, or your search queries.
- **No Remote Servers:** The Extension operates entirely on your local machine and does not contact any external servers, APIs, or database endpoints.
- **No Account Registration:** You do not need to register an account or provide an email address to use the core features of the Extension.

---

## 2. Local Storage and Sync

All configuration data, license keys, site-specific overrides, and exclude-domain lists are stored locally in your browser.

- We utilize the standard Chrome Storage APIs (`chrome.storage.sync`) to sync your preferences across browser sessions on devices where you are logged into your Google account.
- This data remains strictly within your browser environment and is not accessible to us or any third parties.

---

## 3. Permissions Explained

To function correctly, the Extension requires the following browser permissions. Here is why they are needed:

- **`storage`**: Used to save and load your preferences (e.g. bold intensity ratio, selected reading themes, custom site exclusions, and license activation key).
- **`activeTab`**: Used to apply bionic text formatting to the text elements of the web page currently loaded in your active tab when you trigger the formatting. The Extension only modifies document elements locally in-memory inside the browser and does not send content elsewhere.

---

## 4. Third-Party Services

If you purchase a Pro license, payment processing is handled securely by third-party payment gateways (e.g., Stripe, Gumroad, or ExtensionPay). We do not collect or store your payment details (such as credit card numbers or billing addresses) on our systems. Please refer to the privacy policies of the respective payment providers for details on how they process transactions.

---

## 5. Security

Since all data processing and storage happens directly inside the sandboxed environment of your local Chrome browser, your settings benefit from the same security measures that protect your web browser itself.

---

## 6. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page and the "Last Updated" date at the top will be updated.
